Gabe Grunewald es una atleta diagnosticada\u00a0de c\u00e1ncer por primera vez en 2009<\/strong>. Desde entonces, ha sido una luchadora. Con tan solo 22 a\u00f1os se le detect\u00f3 un carcinoma qu\u00edstico adenoide<\/strong>, una forma rara de c\u00e1ncer que se encuentra principalmente en las gl\u00e1ndulas salivales. A pesar de ello, Grunewald consigui\u00f3 un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s un segundo puesto en la final de 1500 mientras estaba en la Universidad de Minnesota.\u00a0Luch\u00f3 de nuevo cuando le diagnosticaron c\u00e1ncer de tiroides<\/strong> m\u00e1s tarde en 2010, pero no renunci\u00f3 a seguir compitiendo. Termin\u00f3 cuarta en los Trials de 2012 y el verano de 2013 ser\u00eda uno de los mejores en su carrera deportiva, consigui\u00f3 sus mejores marcas en las pruebas de 800 (2:01.38), 1.500\u00a0 (4:01.48)y 3.000 metros (8:42.64).<\/strong> En 2014 fue campeona estadounidense de los 3.000 metros en pista cubierta lo que le hizo poder acudir a al\u00a0Campeonato del Mundo indoor celebrado en Sopot (Polonia)<\/strong>,<\/p>\n Para 2016, Grunewald intent\u00f3 sin \u00e9xito la clasificaci\u00f3n para los\u00a0Juegos Ol\u00edmpicos de R\u00edo<\/strong>\u00a0y en ese mismo a\u00f1o, en agosto, la enfermedad volv\u00eda a estar presente en su vida. Cuando su marido Justin le dio un abrazo, not\u00f3 un bulto en su abdomen que tras el examen m\u00e9dico result\u00f3 ser un tumor cancer\u00edgeno en su h\u00edgado<\/strong>, resultado de la\u00a0met\u00e1stasis del carcinoma adenoide qu\u00edstico<\/strong>. Un mes despu\u00e9s y tras perder la mitad de su h\u00edgado para eliminar el tumor, Gabe cre\u00eda haber olvidado para siempre la enfermedad.<\/p>\n El s\u00e1bado pasado, tras diez a\u00f1os de lucha, los an\u00e1lisis de Grunwald reflejaban que no hab\u00eda nada que hacer. Por eso, su esposo Justin, que tambi\u00e9n es m\u00e9dico, tom\u00f3 la dif\u00edcil decisi\u00f3n de que era hora de despedirse de su esposa y decirle que se estaba muriendo. Wanting to do her no harm we have made the difficult decision to move her to comfort cares this afternoon. I wanted to let you all know while she is still alive so you can send her one last message here or on her wall or on her phone before she heads up to heaven. I wrote this to her a couple years ago below and wanted to share what she means to me. Dear Gabriele, First, thank you. Thank you so much for showing me what it\u2019s like to be and feel alive. It\u2019s easy to pass through life day to day and punch a time card wishing away the hours. Currently although I don\u2019t always show it, I cherish every second. Whether we are out running, binging on a new Netflix series, or just lying in bed being lazy. Nothing beats the feeling I get when I see your smiling face. I know life is scary and I know we have won the lottery of uncertainty, and it\u2019s not fair, but I still choose our life of uncertainly and at times fear, over any alternative option I could think of. I have so much fun with you and have learned more from having you as my best friend and wife than I learned in the rest of my life combined. I know you have been given the heaviest of tasks in life. The task of being brave despite feeling enormous amounts of fear. The task of smiling when your throat wells up with pain and eyes want to fill with tears, but I don\u2019t think you were chosen by random chance, and again I know that\u2019s not fair but you are so amazing at being you and that\u2019s why I feel bravelikegabe is so special. Because there isn\u2019t a word in the dictionary for what you do or who you are. Brave flails in comparison to what you are to me and to so many people out there facing the simplest and silliest of struggles in day to day life. At the end of the day people won\u2019t remember the PRs run or the teams qualified for but they will remember that hard period in their life where they were losing hope but they found inspiration in a young lady who refuses to give up.
